A robot arm, not a fixed track.

Conventional panoramic X-rays use mechanically fixed imaging tracks. Every patient is forced through the same rotation path — regardless of jaw shape or size. The result: focal-layer blur on patients whose anatomy doesn't match the factory arc.

Planmeca's SCARA3 (Selectively Compliant Articulated Robot Arm — three-joint) is a proper three-axis robotic arm. The imaging trajectory is computed in software per exposure, adapted to each patient's actual jaw anatomy. Same platform, same arm, runs the ProMax 3D CBCT imaging when you upgrade — no hardware replacement.

Upgrade mechanics — in simple terms

The ProMax 2D's CCD imaging sensor is replaced with a flat-panel 3D detector. The 3D reconstruction module is loaded into Romexis. What is extraoral bitewing?

Traditional bitewing requires an intraoral sensor in the patient's mouth — difficult or impossible for patients with strong gag reflexes, pediatric patients, elderly patients, and patients with limited mouth opening. Planmeca's extraoral bitewing is a panoramic-style program that captures diagnostic-quality BW image pairs from outside the mouth using optimized interproximal geometry. Can the ProMax 2D really be upgraded to 3D CBCT?

Yes. The 2D and 3D ProMax variants share the exact same robotic chassis, generator, column, and cephalostat. Upgrading from 2D to 3D means swapping the CCD imaging sensor for a flat-panel detector and loading the 3D software license into Romexis.
